Through support from the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 2034, members Glen Goodman of Steinbach, Chris Thomas of St. Norbert and Tim Yaremchuk of Russell traveled to compete in events that were similar to that of the Manitoba Hydro Lineman Rodeo that was held this past June.
There were twenty one teams participating from Western Canada that included British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba. Each team had three members and completed six different tasks that were scored by points against for errors and time.
If the success of an event like this was to be measured by the smiles on all the competitors’ and spectators’ faces, then everyone won. The level of excitement throughout the day was amazing. From the local boy scouts eagerly serving pancakes early in the morning to the encouragement we got from Sask Power CEO, Pat Youza who spent the entire day, the event proved to be a great experience for all. The Rodeo Committee should be commended for a job well done as their event was world class.
This competition supports the fact that our linemen in Manitoba are at a level that is comparable to the best across Canada as far as safety and training are concerned. Fortunately our team of competitors, as well as the volunteer entourage, managed to find a little time after the competition to support the local businesses and build lasting relationships with other lineman teams from the West.
We look forward to returning next year to defend the title and participate again in a great event.

| September 6, 2005 Katrina Lineman Utility & Gas Jobs Entergy's workforce has restored electrical service to more than 632,000 of the 1.1 million customers affected by Hurricane Katrina.
Entergy continues making steady progress, restoring power to more than 632,000 customers while more than 459,000 remain without electrical service.
Gas
There is extensive damage to Entergy's gas system which has affected service to many of Entergy's 147,000 natural gas customers in New Orleans. On Sunday, Entergy Gas Operations sent damage control personnel into Algiers and some other areas of Orleans Parish. They are planning to send assessment and restoration workers, beginning in Algiers this week, and moving into other areas of the city as they become accessible enough for damage assessment and repairs over the following days and weeks.
| August 31, 2005 Utility Jobs begin Baton Rouge, La.. - Entergy line crews, contractors and tree trimmers climbed into their trucks today and began reclaiming the accessible portions of its service area devastated by Hurricane Katrina.
Katrina virtually annihilated large sections of Entergy's electrical system in southeast Louisiana, New Orleans and Mississippi, leaving nearly 1.1 million residents without power. The catastrophic structural damage and severe flooding from the storm have rendered many areas of Entergy's service territory impassable. Entergy began aerial damage assessments of the inaccessible areas this morning.
As of 11 a.m., power was restored to approximately 72,000 customers in Baton Rouge and its surrounding parishes. The line crews are continuing to work up to the fringes of impassable areas and will be in position to begin restoration as soon as they become accessible.
''This will be a marathon, not a sprint,'' said Renae Conley, Entergy Louisiana president and CEO. ''We will work as rapidly and safely as we can. This is not just a restoration effort for us. It's a matter of helping people get their lives back together as soon as possible. Many of our employees working to help restore power to others are residents of the area and are also dealing with the loss of their own homes and property. The situation is devastating.''
Entergy presently has 4,000 line workers committed to restoring service, well below what the company would like to have for a restoration of this type due to limited worker availability from other utilities also affected by Katrina. Energy continues working to bring in additional restoration personnel. But neighboring utilities were hit hard by Hurricane Katrina and also are seeking additional help.
| August 30, 2005 Entergy Louisiana Utility Jobs New Orleans, La.. - The threat of severe damage by Hurricane Katrina has prompted Entergy Louisiana to commit a large number of its workers to the southern portion of the Entergy service territory.
Officials announced Sunday that Entergy's line workers and support staff located throughout Louisiana will respond to the devastation from Hurricane Katrina over the next few days. At this time, most forecasts predict that Katrina will make landfall sometime Monday near New Orleans.
Entergy has 2,000 line workers - roughly half from the Entergy service territory and half from other areas, plus vegetation and support workers - committed to restoring service. Entergy is in contact with other utilities and contract workers to pre-position as many out-of-state utility crews as possible to quickly move in to help restore service. But utilities in Florida that have been damaged by Hurricane Katrina have already brought together a large work force that Entergy normally would draw from. Restoration for Entergy customers could be delayed until those workers complete the work in Florida and are released to Entergy.
Hurricane Katrina is capable of causing widespread and extended power outages. Severe damage could occur to Entergy's system requiring weeks to re-build. In addition, restoration may be hampered by flooding, blocked access or other obstacles. Entergy crews and contractors are prepared to work long hours after the storm passes, restoring service to customers as quickly and as safely as possible.
| August 30, 2005 Progress Energy Florida Utility Jobs Progress Energy Florida expects to send 400 employees and contractors to the Gulf Coast this week to help central Louisiana-based utility Cleco Power restore electric service in areas devastated by Hurricane Katrina.
As part of Progress Energy's mutual-aid agreement with the Southeastern Electric Exchange, 200 line and tree workers will travel to Louisiana early this week. Later in the week, another 200 employees and contractors will travel to the Gulf Coast, after helping restore power in South Florida.
"We know how important it is to have as many people as possible helping to get the lights back on,"
said David McDonald, Progress Energy Florida's system storm coordinator. "Other utilities have assisted our company and our customers after major storms in the past."
Katrina initially made landfall Thursday night and knocked out power to more than 1.4 million South Florida residents. Katrina then lashed the Gulf Coast states, including Mississippi, Alabama and Louisiana, and millions of power outages are expected.
About 200 Progress Energy Florida employee and contract crews have been assisting Florida Power & Light with its restoration efforts in South Florida since Saturday. When FPL releases those crews later this week, they will travel to the Gulf Coast.
Progress Energy Carolinas also is deploying more than 480 employees and contractors to its western North Carolina service area and on to the Gulf Coast states.
| August 30, 2005 Co-ops unite for emergency South Mississippians are accustomed to the sight of crews from electric cooperatives other than their own working to help restore power in the wake of hurricanes and tropical storms.
The electric power associations' emergency work plan is a reciprocal agreement carefully crafted to ensure every electric cooperative receives the assistance it needs and is given the opportunity to return the favor.
The bottom line is the restoration of electric service as quickly and as safely as possible despite difficult, dangerous working conditions that may involve high winds, downpours or toppled trees.
We consider our emergency plan a work in progress. Each year representatives of electric power associations meet to review the plan, evaluate effectiveness and make improvements.
We have a lot of time and effort invested in the plan, and it pays off in immeasurable ways every time a natural disaster disrupts service to our members.

| August 29, 2004 U.S. faces skilled-worker shortage The U.S. faces a shortage of 35 million workers over the next three decades, especially those with specialized skills, according to a report by the Employment Policy Foundation, a business-funded research organization.
The employers' group says the current political debate over the lack of U.S. job growth and the fears of outsourcing of technology jobs to India and manufacturing jobs to China may be set against a longer-term trend running in the opposite direction.
With the retirement of workers born during the baby boom after World War II, the U.S. economy must boost its productivity or admit more immigrants to cope with the expected shortfall, said the group, which represents companies such as General Motors, Pfizer and Boeing.
Since a slowdown in the economy began in March 2001, 1.2 million jobs have disappeared, even though that recession ended in November of the same year. According to the trend of previous recessions, the economy should have added 6.2 million more jobs by now, the union-backed Employment Policy Institute said.
The Labor Department on Sept. 3 is expected to report a 160,000 increase in August employment, according to the median of forecasts in a Bloomberg survey. That compares with an average of 55,000 new jobs in June and July and 225,400 the first five months of the year.
The presidential campaign of Democrat John Kerry has seized on the data of that institute to make its claim that the Bush administration is not creating enough high-paying, quality jobs.
At a campaign event in Ridley Park, Pa., on Aug. 17, President Bush also promised to create more jobs in the U.S. by cutting taxes and regulations.
"We've got more work to do to keep jobs here in America. We've got to make sure this is the best place for people to expand the job base in the world," Bush said.

| August 6, 2004 Work safely in hot weather Heat stress can strike workers unexpectedly and in extreme cases can be fatal. Signs that a worker may be suffering from heat stress include nausea/vomiting, dizziness, slurred speech, and hot, dry skin.
Employers, supervisors and co-workers should be aware of factors that may contribute to a person's heat stress, such as:
air temperature
humidity
radiant heat
air or wind speed
physical activity
clothing
Other factors that may affect a person's ability to work in the heat include age, health status, level of fitness, body weight, level of hydration, and use of prescription and non-prescription drugs.
The factors affecting how hot a person feels can be controlled to some extent. Lower the temperature with air conditioning or a good ventilation system; lower the humidity with a good ventilation system and/or dehumidifiers; wear clothing that allows sweat to evaporate easily; wear sunglasses and sunscreen to reduce sun exposure, if required.
Steps can be taken to prevent heat related problems:
take time to adjust to the heat
drink plenty of fluids at regular intervals
schedule the work in the coolest part of the day
try to work in the shade
take regular breaks in a cool/shaded place
avoid alcohol and caffeine.
Employers and workers are responsible for ensuring the safety of their staff and co-workers.

| July 26, 2004 Tar Sands | Oil Sands In Alberta, Canada, oils sands hold more oil than Saudi Arabia.
EVERYONE knows that Saudi Arabia is the undisputed king of the castle of oil. After all, the official statistics have long made it clear that the country sits on top of a quarter of the world's proven reserves of petroleum. Moreover, four of its neighbours—including Iraq—can claim about a tenth apiece. In contrast, the United States (which consumes a quarter of world oil production) controls a mere 3% of the world's reserves.
So the Middle East remains the only place that really matters in the oil world, right? Wrong, according to the Canadians. For decades, they have been complaining that the official bean-counters have unfairly neglected the energy trapped in the Athabasca tar sands of Alberta—rock formations laced with hydrocarbons that can be mined and processed to yield barrels of oil. Geologists have long claimed that the energy content of these sands is so great that there may be more oil trapped in Alberta than under all of Saudi Arabia. The snag, of course, is that it takes far more energy and money to squeeze oil out of this mucky stuff than it does to pump it out of the ground at a conventional oilfield.
